Walmart welcomes AI shopping agents. Retailers should write their terms first

Walmart has opened an Agent Gateway for approved AI agents to search its stock and buy for customers, while Amazon blocks them. Shoppers get a profile per agent, can require approval for each purchase or set spending limits, and agents that break Walmart's published terms are blocked (TechCrunch).

Elsewhere retail is earlier on the curve. A survey found in November 2025 that 25 percent of Swiss people already use AI tools for online shopping (netzwoche). Large grocers use AI mostly in the background, for order forecasts and recommendations, and 64 percent of consumers there call human sales assistance essential (inside-it).

Agents will arrive from the customer's side whether a retailer prepares or not. Walmart's model is a ready template: one defined entrance, a profile per agent, limits set by the customer, public terms with consequences. A retailer that defines those rules first gets agents it can trust instead of crawlers it has to fight.

Customers still say they value human service. The sales assistants who combine product knowledge with digital skills will be the ones shops keep. Training retail staff for that mix is one of the courses your donation funds.

Practical step: decide whether your shop welcomes, limits or blocks AI agents, publish the terms, and test with one or two agent platforms.
